Women's 1st Team: Caradon 1-0 Tavistock Player of the Match Zoe Viggers
Tavistock relinquished top spot in South 1 with a disappointing away defeat at bottom place Caradon, the result sees Tavistock slip to third place in the league 3 points behind Plymouth University and Kingsbridge & Salcombe although the the Reds still have a game in hand over their promotion rivals. A win on Thursday night against Okehampton will see Tavistock regain top spot thanks to their superior goal difference. With Tavistock missing first team regulars, Sarah Law, Susannah Boulle and Meg Benton the Reds were forced to re shuffle the line up and it appeared to take them a while to adapt, the intensity from the previous game was missing and it was Tavistock player of the match Zoe Viggers who was the busier of the two goalkeepers early on. Neither side were able to create any clear cut chances and both teams failed to retain possession for any great length of time. Tavistock were able to bring on right back Hannah Colston in the second half which allowed both Elz Mills-Hicks and Laura Armstrong to move into their more accustomed midfield and front line positions respectively. Both sides were looking more of an attacking threat without really troubling the opposing keepers but the home side got the breakthrough and only goal of the game when a ball crossed in from the right baseline deflected in off a Reds defender and into the goal. Tavistock fought hard to grab a equaliser but but were unable to do as the home side packed the midfield and defence and denied Tavistock any space to exploit. Tavistock were clearly disappointed with the result but credit must be given to Caradon who looked far better than a team placed bottom of the league, the Reds know they can bounce straight back with a win on Thursday and set up a tense finish for the remaining 3 games, the penultimate game of the season will see them travel to promotion rivals Kingsbridge & Salcombe.
Men's 2nd Team: Tavistock 9-2 Bude
This was another great performance from Tavistock, who are fighting to stay in the league. Tavistock are really starting to play some entertaining hockey and attacked from the start. The linking game has really started to be the strength in the Tavistock team and with a weakened opposition, Tavi’ were able to show this ability to its full. The first goal was not long in coming after some fine work on the right by Honey Snr moving well with Fenwick who gave a fine pass to the dynamic Elliott who slotted home. This was the first of his four goals for the day and he is looking to be one of the top scorers this season. Honey Jnr was showing some silky skills as usual and was like a whirling dervish in the visitors D and numerous short corners were won as the Bude frustrations started to show. Fenwick scored two from the spoils. Anning and Hanson were dominant in defence and both have an attacking mindset and this showed in abundance and added strength to the Tavistock attack. Andrews and Venton both found themselves on the score sheet following some good team work, as did Hall, who has scored in both the home and away fixtures against Bude. Tavistock did let in two goals which were a well taken shot from close in and a penalty flick. Both keepers of Osborne and Pugsley enjoyed good solid games and commanded their D’s confidently. Although this game was a fantastic result Tavistock are looking to face relegation but the style of play now on show is worthy of the division. Missing four key players, it just shows how the squad has improved in depth.
