Men's 1st team: ECV Hornets 1-10 Tavistock
Tavistock travelled to Exeter to take on Hornets in what should have been a routine victory but with testing weather conditions it was not going to be an easy game. The league leaders put in the best 35 minutes of the season so far in the first half Andy went in to the break leading 7-0. A combination of discipline in defence, good decision making and pace in attack allowed the Reds to race into a 5-0 lead within 15 minutes. The phrase "like a hot knife through butter" seems appropriate in terms of describing the Tavistock attack, Hornets had no answer for skill or pace of the attacks. Five minutes into the second half Tavistock suffered a blow when former Mount Kelly student Barney Megicks was forced off with an injury meaning they would play the last 30 minutes with just 10 players. Tavistock maintained the high tempo but were on occasions caught short at the back by a spirited Hornets team. The goals came from Bob Carr 4, Mark Forshaw 2, Ollie Richards 2 and Si Fenwick 2.
HA Vase: Tavistock 3-3 Wootton Bassett (1-3 APS)
Tavistock suffered heartbreak in this last 16 cup tie, having taken the lead 3 times the Reds conceded a goal in the last 30 seconds of the game resulting in the game going to flicks following the 3-3 draw. Tavistock led 1-0 at half time in what was a fairly even game with the home side shading the number of chances on goal, forward Sam Willetts pounced on a goal keeping error to slap the ball home at the back post. The first half showed the difference in the South and Central leagues, Wootton Bassett proving to be the toughest opposition Tavistock have faced this season despite the fact they currently sit in eighth place in their league. Before the crowd had even had time to enjoy their half time refreshments and return pitch side the visitors raced into an early attack and were awarded a penalty flick which they converted. Tavistock created the greater clear cut chances and regained the lead when Si Fenwick converted a penalty flick after Ollie Richards had been fouled in the D. The visitors again drew level when they were the quickest to react to a loose ball in the Tavistock D. With just 10 minutes remaining the home side took the lead when forward Mark Forshaw flicked a penalty corner which the keeper did well to save, fortunately for the Reds the ball dropped to Willetts who claimed his second of the game. Five minutes later Tavistock had a chance to score a fourth on the break but a combination of good defending and goal keeping kept the score at 3-2, with the clock running down and Tavistock on the verge of booking a place in the last 8 the visitors were awarded a penalty corner. The ball was played into the D where it was deflected by a Bassett player diverting the ball past the outstretched Grahame in the Tavistock goal. The visitors held their nerve to win the game 3-1 on penalty flicks. Next week sees a big weekend for Tavistock as a win on Saturday at home to OPM's will clinch promotion and a win away at Bodmin on Sunday will see Tavistock be crowned league champions.
Ladies 1s: Tavistock 2 - Caradon 2
The ladies braved some horrendous rain and winds this week to travel to Liskeard.
Soaked to the skin before the game had even begun, the ladies worked hard to motivate themselves to play their game in the poor weather conditions.
Both teams had equal possession in the first half however Caradon found an early lead when Tavistocks concentration lapsed in a penalty corner.
The girls were not deterred and quickly retaliated when a swift ball across the circle found Donnellys reverse stick for a smooth deflection to equalise the score.
Tavistock continued to gain momentum and soon won a penalty corner. A slap in from Scott was saved by the oppositions keeper however Gaspars fast reactions took Tavistock into the lead with 2-1 at half time.
Both teams suffered with the cruel winds and the game slowed as vision was tainted by the rain. Tavistock continued to cause pressure on the opposing teams circle but just could not echo last weeks scoring form. It was Caradon who scored the next and final goal of the game leaving the ending score a fair and soggy 2 all draw.
