L1's: Tavistock 3-3 Exeter University -Player of the Match Georgia Donnelly
After coming from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 away at White Eagles last week the Reds knew they needed to start quickly against Exeter Uni. Unfortunately for the home side it didn't go to plan, despite the better of the early chances it was the visitors who scored the opening goal of the game from a penalty corner, the initial shot was cleared off the line by defender Elz Mills-Hicks but it was the uni players who reacted fastest and put away the rebound. Despite going behind the Reds continued to look dangerous in attack, Gaspar showing good skill on the ball and Armstrong, Donnely, Benton and Lindsey looking to cause the Uni defence problems with some incisive runs. The new midfield pairing of Janice Scott and Sarah Payne was working well and helping Tavistick to maintain possession of the ball. The visitors doubled their lead early in the second half following an attack down the right hand side of the pitch. Tavistock showed the determination that salvaged a point last week and they were in the ascent early when Georgia Donnelly showed great composure to eliminate her marker before pushing the ball past the Uni keeper, Mount Kelly College student Eve Lindsey found herself unmarked at the back post and was able to take a touch before striking the ball at goal to bring the score line to 2-2. The Reds received another boost when with 10 minutes remaining, influential forward Becky Lamb arrived after returning from a school fixture. Lamb instantly looked to make an impact on the gas, and set off on one of her trademark runs, she carried the ball along the back line before crossing to last seasons top scorer Laura Armstrong who coolly converted on her reverse to put the home side in the lead. Despite having the majority of possession and looking the more dangerous in attack Tavistock could not hold onto their lead and with just seconds remaining Exeter managed to grab an equaliser to mean for second successive week Tavistock with a 3-3 draw. With a new look team this season it has been a positive start to the league, next week sees Tavistock travel to Penzanze who will be looking for their first points of the season.
M1's: Tavistock 6-1 Bodmin - MoM Mark Forshaw
Tavistock played their first home game of the season against a tough Bodmin side who arrived in a confident mood following their home victory against Plymouth Marjon last week. Although the opening 15 minutes saw both teams have equal possession of the ball it was the Reds who looked the more likely to score, Forshaw and Fenwick both going close with the latter having a goal disallowed by umpire Graham Woolcock following a 30 yard run with the ball but the shot was judged to have been taken from outside of the D. The opening goal did go the way of the home team and it was Summer signing Mark Forshaw who scored it with an instinctive strike from the top of the D. Midfielder Dom Stanbury scored the second goal soon after when he squeezed the ball in from a tight angle following a fine save by the Bodmin keeper from Tavistock penalty corner. Forshaw claimed his second of the game with a well struck penalty corner. The visitors pulled a goal back just before the half time break from a penalty stroke. The second half started much the same way as the first half with both sides sharing the possession but with neither side able to convert their chances, mid way through the half Forshaw capped a fine Man of the Match performance scoring his third goal from a well worked penalty corner routine. The back line of Carr, Stanbury, Wood and Marchant were again in fine form and confidently neutralised any attacking threat from Bodmin. The hard working Richards got on the score sheet again, this time with a smart reverse stick finish into the roof of the net, Richards then turned provider as he played an incisive pass through the Bodmin midfield to forward Sam Willets who kept his composure to beat his marker before playing Fenwick through one on one with the keeper, Fenwick's first touch got the ball of the ground and past the keeper before striking the ball into the goal. Tavistock travel to Truro next week looking for another win, the Reds are one of three teams with maximum points but sit at the top of the table with a superior goal difference after the opening two league games.
