Ladies 1s - Tavistock 6-1 Torbay
Tavistock met Torbay this weekend for their last home game of the season, with a couple players missing it saw the Reds try out a new formation against what seemed to be a slightly lighter Torbay side than earlier in the season. The game started at a some what slower pace than the last 2 weeks, but the home side took control on early on and took a 1-0 lead from a well taken goal from Gaspar. This was then soon followed up by goals from Shillaw, Lamb and another from Gaspar. All well worked team goals. In the last 5 minutes of the first half Torbay started pressing the Reds defence and managed to make a break and slotted a clean shot away past Tavistock's Viggers to close the second half at 4-1.
Tavistock were determined to step up the quality in the second half and start showing the recent class and composure that they've shown in previous weeks, with the away side also stepping up the pace in the second half. Torbay quickly started to pile on the pressure but this was nothing a strong Tavistock backline couldn't deal with, and player of the match Boulle really showed her strength and saw the ball clear. The home side won a short corner that was slipped to captain Scott on the left who calmly slipped this past the Torbay keeper. With Tavistock lifted once again this saw an opportunity for Shillaw to show off her pace, when she won the ball in the home sides half and ran the length of the pitch to seal the win for the ladies and take the score to 6-1.
Devon Cup Semi Final: Teign 1-0 Tavistock
This was Tavistocks second succesive Devon Cup Semi Final, unfortuantely the Reds lost 1-0 away at Teign, the same scoreline they suffered away to Plymouth University at the same stage last season. Despite the loss the players were still upbeat about their peformance against their higher league opposition. Teign are hoping a win next week in the league will secure another top 3 finish in Prem 2B, the league above where Tavistock currently play. The home side enjoyed the majority of posession and territory in the first half but were unable to score, the backline of Mills-Hicks, Pollock, Boulle and Scott were looking determined not to concede. The determination of the defence combined with the in form keeper Viggars was certainly staring to frustrate the home side, when a shot deflected over Viggars and was destined for the goal the Reds keeper impressively turned and put an outstretched glove to deflect the ball past the goal and prevent a certain goal. With just over 10 minutes left before half time Teign were rewarded for the constant pressure when they coverted a well worked penalty corner. The Reds remained positive in the second half and began to enjoy longer periods of pressure and started to create some chances in front of goal, Gaspar, Donnelly, Lindsey and Donne all starting to look like they may grab the equalising goal. The chances started to come as the midfield of Nevin, Bassett and Shillaw began to dominate the battle in the middle of the pitch. Despite the Tavistock looking the more likely to score in the final minutes they were unable to convert chances into goals meaning Teign will progress to the fianl in the hope to defend the Cup they won last season. Tavistock will face Bude next week in their final league game knowing a win should realistically clinch 2nd place in the league for successive seasons. The performance today shows that as the Reds look next season for promotion they would be able to compete in the league above.
Mens' 1st Team: ISCA 1-2 Tavistock
Tavistock faced 4th placed ISCA in their final game of their league winning season but travelled to Exeter with only 10 players due to the unavailability of a number of players including Ollie Richards, Andy Berry and Paul Marchant. Skipper Tom Honey and forward Sam Willetts both lined up in defence with the free scoring Forshaw dropping back to the midfield. Despite the numerical advantage it took ISCA until mid way through the first half to cause a problem to the Reds defence, keeper Grahame came off his line quickly to make the save and keep the game tied at 0-0. Minutes later the home side won a penalty corner which was flicked powerfully past Grahame to give ISCA the lead. Despite a number of chances the Reds were unable to score and went in 1-0 down at the break, despite having a player less the league champions were still looking solid in defence and dangerous in attack. Midfielder Dom Stanbury equalised early in the second half and then 5 minutes later his fine solo run resulted in a goal when after beating four ISCA players hit shot was touched in by the unmarked B Carr at the far post. The disciplined Reds held firm and the backline of R Carr, S Stanbury, Honey and Willetts were literally throwing their bodies on the line to keep the one goal advantage. Things were made tougher when Stanbury was shown a yellow card meaning Tavistock played the next five minutes with just 9 men but again they held strong and were able to see out the game 2-1. Forward Barney Megicks put in a fantastic performance in the front line with Carr, it was his last league game for the club before moving away to University. The win means Tavistock finish with an impressive 22 wins from 22 games and a goal difference of 105. Next week Tavistock travel to Torbay in the Semi Final of the Devon Trophy with the winners progressing to the Final on April 16th.
