Goals galore as all 3 sides win

Ladies 1st team: Tavistock 10-1 Plym Valley:

Tavistock got back to winning ways following their draw away at White Eagles last week, the home side started as they finished last week applying early pressure on their opponents. The visitors also started brightly, passing the ball confidently and winning a number of early penalty corners, their performance was certainly more accomplished than their league position would suggest. The home side did get the early breakthrough thanks to a quick double from forward Becky Lamb, the first goal came when Lamb pounced a poor clearance from the the Valley keeper and fired the ball back past her into the goal.  Lambs second goal came moments later following a quick free hit taken by Janice Scott, the ball made its way to Lamb who again showed the composure to slot the the ball past the keeper. Captain and player of the match Laura Armstrong scored the first of her four goals from a penalty corner before forward Sarah Law scored what will surely be a contender for goal of the season.  When Law picked the ball up just inside the attacking half there didn't appear to be much of a goal scoring threat, however Law beat the first two defenders before taking the ball into the D and sweeping the ball into the roof of the net.  The fith goal was scored by centre half Robynne Fenwick who flicked the ball past the keeper from close range after good work from Lamb on the right, Lamb then completed her hat trick before half time after a precise pass into the D from the attacking right back Hannah Colston. Plym Valley scored just before half time with a well worked penalty corner. The second half continued in much the same way with Lamb, Armstrong, Fenwick and Law carrying the ball through the visitors midfield and defence, it was the combination of Lamb and Armstrong that led to the captain scoring her second of the game with a cool finish passed the advancing keeper. The captain completed her hat trick which a reverse stick finish following more patient build up play, Mount Kelly College student Meg Benton scored shortly after when she made her way to the back post to fire the ball past the keeper.  Benton, growing in confidence game by game put in another good performance in both and attack and defence and deserved her goal.  The 10th goal came when Armstrong scored her fourth of the game with another reverse stick finish when she picked the ball up at the far post.  Although the forwards inevitably get the glory for the 10 goals that were scored  the Tavistock back line of Viggers, Colston, Patterson, Pollock, Boulle and Kelly looked confident and transferred the ball effectively to set a number of threatening attacks.

Mens 1st team: East Devon 2-5 Tavistock

Tavistock went into this game knowing things would not be easy, although the Reds won the reverse fixture 11-0 and still on a high from last weeks top of the table win the home side had a full squad and were clearly looking to improve on the result from earlier in the season.  The home side started every quickly, applying pressure quickly to all the the Tavistock players but the league leaders showed their quality and hit East Devon with two quick goals despite being under all the early pressure.  Will Jones scored the first scoring from a tight angle following good work from fellow forward Ollie Richards, it was Richards who went from provider to scorer shortly after when his persistence was rewarded with a goal.  East Devon looked to hit back and get a goal before half time, Tim Fowler was controlling the midfield and he looked the most likely East Devon player to create something, the home side did get the goal from a penalty corner just before half time.   As predicted East Devon came out looking to score the equaliser and they got the goal in the first five minutes of the second half.  When an aerial pass was taken down the Tavistock players stopped when an East Devon player won possession of the ball having not given the Reds defender the required space however the umpire did not blow for the offence and the home side capatalised and scored the equalising goal.  Both sides continued to attack but without creating any clear cut chances, Tavistock almost scored when forward Si Fenwick flicked a penalty corner high to the right only for it to be spectacularly cleared off the line by Fowler.  The next penalty corner did result in a goal when Fenwick slipped the ball to Berry who passed it back to Fenwck who rounded the keeper and flicked into the goal.  Tavistock could have scored a couple more goals but the home defence were able to deal with the half chances created.  A quick counter attack led to Dom Stanbury finding Ollie Richards unmarked on the left hand side of the D, Richards took a touch before firing the ball past the keeper.  Richards then completed his hatrick after another counter attack, Fenwick slipped the ball to Richards who eliminated the keeper and flicked the ball past the defender on the line.  Tavistock played without Alex Shephard, captain Tom Honey and forward Barney Megicks who were both involved with Mount Kelly College school fixtures, this combined with a strong performance from East Devon meant the league leaders had to fight for the three points, the defence of Graham, Carr, Wood, Marchant and Hutchings were as tight as ever and were able to deal confidently with the attacking threat of the home side.  The win means that if other results go their way Tavistock could clinch promotion next week with a win at home to United Services.

Tavistock A 9  Penzance A 4

The route to improvement, although being a bit rocky at times, finally found its way on Saturday.  Both sides fielding what were strong sides contested the three points from the start. Sargent-Megicks was on the score sheet early on, after some fine individual skills.  Tom Honey dominated the middle, which allowed the other forwards of Walker, Elliott and Andrews to  continue applying pressure.  The home sides midfield of Venton, Donnelly and Honey  Snr, worked and linked well and opportunities came in abundance. Walker scored great goal after some hard work, the attacking back of Hanson also found himself in the D and hammered a goal in.  Honey Jnr, scored a powerful couple of goals to keep the gap, but Penzance continued to look dangerous on the break and found space a few times to keep the pressure up.  Captain Anning was nothing but solid at the back and distributed well and Tosdevin and Mason held the sides solidly. Pugsley had another athletic and commanding game in goal.  All in all, this as a great performance by the second XI, who worked as a team, thought about the structure and put into practice a lot of what is discussed.
