Another 3 points but Cup disappointment for Mens 1's

Men's 1st team: Plymouth Uni 0-2 Tavistock

Tavistock maintained their promotion push with an away win against Plymouth University, in what was expected to be a tough game the students did not disappoint.  The league leaders were bolstered by the late addition of captain Tom Honey and versatile attacker Barny Megicks due the cancellation of the Mount Kelly College school fixtures.  As expected the students played a fast paced, direct counter attacking game and although looked dangerous they failed to create any clear cut chances in the first half, in what was a fairly even first 35 minutes it was the Reds who went in to the break with a 1-0 lead following a penalty corner move which was converted by leading scorer Si Fenwick after a pass from Andy Berry.  The second half carried on in much the same way with both sides looking to attack at pace, the Uni looked more clinical in the attacking third than they did in the first half and did win a number of penalty corners but were unable to beat Matt Graham in the Tavistock goal, Graham showing the form that makes it clear to see why Tavistock have the best defensive record in the league.  The Reds had a number of chances on goal and could have extended their lead had it not been for Uni keeper who was proving extremely hard to beat. Tavistock did get their second goal  when Honey won the ball on the edge of the D before exchanging passes with Fenwick and slotting the ball into the goal.  Plymouth Uni maintained their attacking philosophy but were unable to score a consolation goal.

Mens 2nd team: Tavistock A 0   Plymouth University B 7

A new year but the same issues at hand.  This was a game that was pretty balanced on the basis that the game flowed from end to end with both sides getting their chances in the D. The difference is in the finishing and the defending.  Tavistock played very well and held the students for a good period of the first half, with Stanyer, Anning and Hanson playing strong at the back.  The return of Venton added a real competitive edge and Walker, Donnelly and Elliott were finding great space and attacking with pace.  Unfortunately the students were far more decisive in front of goal and although Pugsley had another fine game, he was being pulled wide to cover areas and subsequently left easy tap in opportunities.

Devon Trophy Quarter Final: Okehampton 2-1 Tavistock MoM Tom Honey

The day had finally arrived for this eagerly anticipated cup game, since the draw was made in September it was a game that both sides had been looking forward too.  Tavistock went in to the game as the underdogs against their higher league opposition but were  keen to to impress and maintain the form that had take them to the top of their league.  Okehampton had the better of the early minutes creating a number of chances and looked effective on the break.  Although under pressure, the Reds defence looked as strong and as ever, Graham was doing everything to keep the ball out.  The home side did get the only goal of the first half with just 3 minutes remaining with a clinical reverse stick effort that found its way past Graham.  As the game progressed, Tavistock started to tire, with only 11 players due to the absence of Marchant, Berry and D. Stanbury Okehampton looked to take the advantage and used their substitutes well to maintain their attacking intensity.  Mid way through the second half the home side scored a second from a well worked penalty corner, with nothing to lose at 2-0 down Tavistock continued to attack and got a deserved a goal through Barny Megicks from another well worked penalty corner.  Tavistock were unable to create any other clear cut chances in front of goal as Okehampton held on for the win, it was a win that was deserved for the home side who won more penalty corners and created a greater number of chances in front of goal.  Tavistock will look to bounce back next week at home when they host second placed ISCA in the league, a win would move them 12 points clear with just 8 games remaining.
