Ladies 1st Team Tavistock 2-1 Bodmin: Player of the Match Emma Passmore
Tavistock began their league campaign with a 2-1 win overly newly promoted Bodmin although they left it late to secure all 3 points, a goal from Robynne Fenwick just two minutes from time meant the Reds got off to a winning start. Tavistock were dealt a massive blow on the morning of the game when summer signing Amy Headon was ruled out of the game through illness, the versatility of a number of the Tavistock players meant a quick reshuffle did not have a neagative affect on the team. The home side started the brighter and created a number of chances that they were unable to convert, Gaspar, Law and Fenwick all going close but all were unable to beat the Bodmin keeper who was in commanding form, although the home side appeared to be dominating the game it was the visitors who came closest to scoring with a quick counter attack which saw the ball narrowly miss the goal at the far post. With the game tied at the break the home side knew they needed to be more clinical in front of goal if they were going to take the points against a strong and competitive Bodmin side, Sarah Law scored to give the home side the lead following good work from B Lamb on the right hand side. Once the ball found its way across the Bodmin D there was only one outcome when the in form Law pounced to slap the ball in the goal. Bodmin were rewarded for their hard work when with just 15 minutes remaining they converted from a penalty corner to level the score at 1-1. With just two minutes remaining Tavistock got the goal they felt they deserevd when Fenwick finished on her backhand from a closing angle, when the Reds midfielder recieved the ball there appeared to little chance of a shot but she moved the wide of her marker before her backhand effort found its way through a crowd of players and into the far corner of the goal. Tavistock were delighted to give 1st league debuts to Mount Kelly students Alice Lamb and Lola Francis, both of who put in good performances showing composure beyond their years. Next week Tavistock travel to Falmouth who following their relagation from Premier 2 last season began this season with an 8-5 victory against promoted Okehampton.
