England Hockey - lockdown

England Hockey are disappointed to have to confirm that the national lockdown announced on Saturday will mean no club or community hockey from 5 November until after 4 December at the earliest.

The latest government announcement orders all sports facilities to close and therefore club and other community hockey activity is suspended until the game is in a position to resume.

The government announcement made reference to returning to the Covid Alert Levels after the end of this period of lockdown, and should that be the case we are confident that clubs will be able to resume promptly in line with our previously-issued Return to Play guidance.

It will take time to determine the best approach to reorganising activity and we ask that players and clubs respect the need for organisers to consider the next steps properly in light of the timing and extent of the upcoming break.

England Hockey will communicate with all clubs, England Hockey League teams and EH Championships entrants as well as Player Pathway organisers in the coming days.

Notice of Tavistock Hockey AGM
30 th July 2020 19:00 at the Pitch
Dear all
CLUB Update
As I write I am hoping that all members and their families are safe and well.
The directors have been undertaking a lot of work with both the league and England Hockey to
ensure we are prepared for the start of the new season.
As you are aware, we are planning to continue with two Ladies teams, but proposing only one men’s
league team and also a development/social team.
We have confirmed the services of last year’s coach Loz for the forthcoming season and he will
continue to run the senior players training sessions.
The club is in need of additional support and to this end are hoping that a number of you would like
to join the committee or board of directors and help steer the club forward while we rebuild the
club over the next few seasons.
We must stress that none of these roles in isolation are onerous or time consuming. We are hopeful
that the saying “many hands make light work” will apply to the committee and board of directors
going forward.
We would ask that anyone who wishes to make a contribution behind the scenes step forward as
you will be well supported.
In particular we are looking for the following:
• Treasurer/day to day accounts person (who will be supported by Mark Gott)
• Development/social team captains (on pitch and team selection)
For those who wish to stand as a Director of the Club. They would be warmly welcomed to the board
of directors. This must be done via nomination and the forms can be found here Nomination Form . Any nominations need to be received by noon on 16 th July 2020.
The AGM will be held at the pitch (fingers crossed for the weather) at 19:00 on the evening of the
30th July 2020 as it should afford us the space to socially distance and stay safe. Can I encourage as
many as possible attend as we need a true representation of the club membership.
To coin the phrase “Your club needs you” is an understatement and I look forward to seeing you all
on the night.

Tavistock Men A v Truro B

ON Thursday evening the Tavistock A squad managed their first group training session this season and it paid dividends on Saturday.

Truro B fielded good individual players but Tavistock looked like the stronger team.

Nineteen minutes in, Tavistock’s press formation captured a Truro hit-out and Maxa pounced to open the scoring and adding to his growing goal tally. Ten minutes later Solly Kurzman powered into the D and extended Tavistock’s lead to give them a 2-0 advantage as the teams went in at half time.

Tavistock looked competent, moving the ball early and passing before they could be challenged. Truro successfully kept them pinned in one third of the pitch for a time but gradually Tavistock started to bring the ball back and around the pitch.

Once using the full width they were able to move quickly around the Truro midfield and mount attacks.

One attack led to a penalty corner, which captain Hugh Venton skilfully lifted over the keeper’s pads for Tavistock’s third goal.

Tavistock started to look comfortable – always a danger sign for them – and sure enough Truro began to edge back into the game. Fortunately for the home side Nick Andrews seized an opportunity, scoring a decisive fourth goal, after which the team maintained their impetus to the whistle.

There were strong performances from Tavistock’s young players – Joe Rizk had a solid game and Freddy Bott was outstanding.

Man of the match this week was Izaac Kirwan who had an almost flawless match, dominating the central defence.

Tavistock Men A v Bodmin A

TAVISTOCK MEN’S A 3 v BODMIN A 5

Having started the season with two heavy defeats Tavistock A needed a positive start to this match. Unfortunately fortune favoured the visitors and Tavistock found themselves going into half-time looking the stronger side — but 3-0 down.

They came out hard and within a minute of the whistle had the ball in the Bodmin D. A clearance bobbled up and Luke Maxa stepped in with what any cricketer would have admired as a quality cover-drive, hitting the backboard with a resounding smack.

Nine minutes later Maxa received a cross and swept it past the keeper for Tavistock’s second. The pressure was on Bodmin now and a penalty corner in the 55th minute gave Tavistock a chance to equalise. The push-out was controlled, one-two’d to Maxa and celebrations followed as he slotted his hat-trick to equalise! Tavistock A suffered from not concentrating immediately after scoring last season and it seems the lesson has not been learned. Celebrations were muted when Bodmin took the ball from the whistle straight into Tavistock’s D and scored within 45-seconds.

The remaining seven minutes saw frantic, end-to-end stuff. Tavistock, with nothing to lose, pushed up and came close. In the end Bodmin seized their moment with under two minutes remaining had nipped behind the depleted defence to clinch a final goal and a 5-3 win. Tavistock A will take heart from how they lifted their performance and really began to look like a team. Man of the match went to Luke Maxa.

U15 Boys Success

We started in tough conditions - the fog meant you couldn’t actually see the goal at the other end of the pitch!

We drew Devonport for our first game, which was a great match to settle the team. There were several shots on goal, with the winner coming from an amazing strike by Solly which rebounded from the Devonport goalie straight to Ben to finish it off!

Our second game was against Lipson A and bit of a goal fest with a 5-0 win! A real team effort and a great game to watch from the side-lines (all supporters had to move to the half way line to actually see both ends of the pitch!). The first goal came from a text book pass from Ben to James who sent the ball flying past the Lipson goalie. The second came from a back stick strike from Luke, closely followed by a flick from Luke to Ben to see in the third goal. The fourth goal was another classic back stick strike from Isaac, with the final goal coming from a calculated flick from Ben through the Lipson defence which was probably going to have gone in, but a strike on the ball from Luke guaranteed it finding the back boards!

The third game was against Plymouth who had also won their first 2 games. This was a tougher game than we thought and saw some very strong defending from Joe, Matt and Isaac. There were several attacks on goal but nothing seemed to get past the Plymouth goalie. Credit to Jack who along with our defence, were not going let anything past them to secure us a 0-0 draw.

Our fourth game was against Lipson B with goals from Solly and Luke before going into a much needed rest game and time to reflect before facing both the Marjons Teams.

The penultimate game saw us face Marjons A, which we thought would be the toughest. There were several attempts at the goal from our end, but our defence in Matt, Joe held off the opposition. We had the most corners against us in any of the games, with Matt deflecting a ball off the line with his knee! He carried on playing but it sadly led to him having to sit out the final game. Jack tirelessly stopped any attempt to get the ball into our goal and keeping up his clean sheet. The mid field in Isaac and Ben working hard pushing the balls through as well as holding off the attacks. Our winning goal came from Solly (well it was definitely going in!), but just to make sure, Luke gave it a final helping guide into the goal!

The final game against Marjons B was the decider. It was too complicated to work out the permutations but basically it was going to be Plymouth HC or us who would be crowned winners...we needed a draw or a win?!

It was a brilliant final game! Everyone was so determined; it was a solid team effort. Whilst James, Luke and Solly all nearly scored, it was the passing between everyone, especially Isaac, Ben and Joe working hard to push the ball through as well as working to maintain a strong defence with Jack. The save of the game had to be in the penultimate corner with a strong flick from Marjons to be sent over the goal by Jack – I’m sure his hand is still hurting now! But a 0-0 draw and UNBEATEN!!

The season has not all been about the Finals evening. We have been honoured with a 13-strong squad this year, when last year we struggled to get 7 out each Friday.

Special mentions must also go to those who were unable to play on Friday:

Tom Birchell and Izaac Kirwan, both of whom have sadly sustained injury throughout the season rendering them unable to play the latter matches, Josh Lancashire who has been our fearless rocket on the field and to Reuban Goodman and Fynn Hall, our youngest members who came into the squad this year and see their improvement each Friday. None of last Fridays success would have been possible without the entire squad contribution throughout the season.

Iney Pennington

Iney Pennington was born in near to Tavistock, part of a farming family and at the formation of Tavistock Hockey Club in 1947 joined the Ladies team as a founder member, and played regularly for many years.

Iney took on the role of umpire for the club and fulfilled that responsibility with enthusiasm and fairness for many years, as well becoming a valued mentor and guide to the lady members, many of whom she taught, being a teacher at the Tavistock College.

In later years she was invited to become a Trustee of the Club ( one of four Trustees) and remained as a Trustee until the original grass pitch at Grenville Drive was sold in 201.

Through the difficult process of selling the pitch Iney provided invaluable advice and guidance in her inimitable way to those club members charged with carrying the sale through.

In her failing years Iney remained in contact with the older members of the club, always interested in news of the cub.

A true friend of Tavistock Hockey Club.

The Hockey club was represented at the funeral by Alex Davies, commitee member and second team captain.
