Match Report

Tavistock Mens hosted Devonport Services at Mount Kelly today and came out comfortable 5 nil winners. Right from the off the home team showed the opposition why they currently sit top of the table with their high level of intensity and fast one two hockey. It wasn't long until Tavistock opened the scoring with Captain Josh Walkers surging run into the D and evading some last ditch tackling before cooly slotting in the bottom left corner. Tavistock continued to surge forward and shoot at will but for some great goalkeeping and wayward shooting the score stayed 1 nil until the 25th minute when Tom Honey played a one two with Walker and showed great composure to fire into the corner to give Tavy a healthy 2 nil lead. Tavistock continued to win many short corners but just couldn't find the back of the net. Both teams went in at halftime with Tavistock two goals to the good. Tavistock came out in the second half with the main emphasis on scoring more goals and keeping a clean sheet. Josh Walker tormented the defence for his second goal and the home team's third. Weaving in and out of several Devonport players he fired a hard shot across the keeper into the far corner. The next goal came from Jimmy Berry and definitely a contender for goal of the season. A long aerial was sent into Devonports D and with the keeper advancing off his line and with the ball on the bounce he expertly volleyed it over the keepers head with one touch into the top corner. Tavistock continued to fail to execute any short corners, ( to be addressed by Chopper on Thursday night). The final goal of the game came when a hard slap shot from Honey was brilliantly deflected in by Walker to complete his hatrick and Tavistocks fifth and final goal. Second half aims accomplished. There were periods of excellent hockey on display today and with better finishing, it have easily been a lot more. To confirm great team performance many players got voted for man of the match including defender Ed Cull, Midfield maestro Tom Honey, but with three votes each it was won by both Josh Walker and Jimmy Berry. The donkey of the day went to John Campbell, (still don't know why John?, "did something happen Jeff??!!!!). The men's team have a break next Saturday and then travel down to Truro on the 11th of February. Many thanks to Jo and Sarah for umpiring today
