Match Report |
With just the one point from the previous two matches Tavistock's 1st XI were looking for their next win in a number of weeks. Shepton Mallet HC who Tavistock have historically not met before posed a real threat in the opening 5 minutes with some aggressive pressing high up the pitch, forcing Tavistock into mistakes which eventually led to the opening goal of the match. Tavistock responded well moving the ball round quicker than their opponents and looking especially dangerous on the break. It wasn’t long before a searching ball forward from captain Tom Honey found leading goal scorer Mark Foreshaw unmarked at the top of the circle who punished the home side with a vicious strike. Tavistock however did not capitalise on their momentum going forward and again leaked a soft goal through some soft defending. The reds did not let their heads drop and continued to look dangerous in the final third, Olly Richards punished Shepton Mallett through a fine piece of skill to round the goal keeper and push the ball into an empty goal. Tavistock started to push on in the second half and the skill as well as fitness level really started to shine through. Dom Stanbury picked up a trade mark goal via an elusive run down the baseline to wrong-foot the keeper and Olly Richards bagged a second to secure his man of the match performance. Shepton Mallett picked up a goal in the final 5 minutes but it was Tavistock who came out as the deserved victors.
